Become The Bassist Other Musicians Follow
Discover the coaching program that turns scattered practice, technique, & theory into effortless, musical bass playing - so you walk into your next gig, rehearsal, or jam night with total confidence.
Does This Sound Like You?
Your Practice Doesn't Pay Off
You practice but results don't show up on gigs or rehearsals.
Hands Fall Apart Under Pressure
Your hands work ok alone, but fall apart when used together.
You Worry About Messing Up On Stage
You work hard but still don't fully trust your playing when others are listening.
You Lack Gig Confidence
You want to gig but don't have the confidence to say yes to opportunities.
Technique Breaks Down Mid-Song
Songs start out OK, but tension, fatigue and bad technique creep in before long.
You Sound Mechanical, Not Musical
Locking with a drummer is hard, you rush fills, and lose time when songs get busy.
You're not stuck because you lack talent. You're stuck because you don't have the right pathway to follow.
Which is why I created The Bass Performer Program,
Being A Great Bass Player Would Be Easy If...
Being a great bass player would be easy if it was like building an IKEA table.
Those tables come with instructions.
And as long as you follow them, you get the result you want.
But bass playing doesn't work like that.
There's no clear manual that tells you what to practice, what to ignore, or how to hold it together on gigs.
Instead, most bassists end up stuck between random YouTube lessons, disconnected exercises, and bits of theory that never fully come together.
So when the pressure's on, they hesitate, second-guess, or just freeze.
Whether your goal is to play more gigs, play better gigs, feel more comfortable in a band, improvise, or to hold your own with better musicians, it shouldn't feel this tough.
This is why I created The Bass Performer Program.
It's an 8-week online coaching program, taught 1-1, that's built entirely around your goals, your experience level, and the specific things that are holding your back.
It's an instruction manual for your unique bass playing goals.
Not generic advice, but a clear, connected path that turns you into a confident, musical bass player who thrives in real-world playing situations.
To get started, you'll book a free Bass Playing Diagnostic Video Call.
On the call we'll;
If the program is a good fit for you, I'll then build fully custom syllabus and coach you through it 1-1.
And if it's not, I'll just be honest and tell you. And you'll still leave knowing exactly what to work on next.
No pressure. No obligation. Just clarity.

Other Pre-Recorded Bass Courses
Pre-Recorded Lessons Can't See Your Hands
Your unique problems go unnoticed, bad habits build up over time & you're left wondering what went wrong.
You're Left To Figure It Out On Your Own
Courses give you exercises & videos but that's where it ends. If you get stuck then you're on your own.
Making Progress Becomes Guesswork
You're given all the information but left to wonder what to work on, when to move on, and if you're doing anything right.
Learn With A Professional Bassist Who's Been Where You Are
Years of gigging, recording, and teaching have shown me one thing clearly: most bassists don't struggle on stage because they aren't trying hard enough.
They struggle because no one has helped them focus on what actually matters for them.
Whether it's smooth shifts, locking with drummers, finger control, stamina, or finally feeling confident on stage, the work is rarely about learning more.
It's about making small, specific changes that only become obvious when someone experienced is listening & watching you play.
That's what this The Bass Performer Program was built for.
What You'll Learn
These are just some of the most common issues the Bass Performer Program fixes.
Make Theory Sound Like Music
You'll learn how to apply the theory you know to real world bass playing, and you'll fill in the blanks that you don't.
Fills, Improvising, & Jamming
You'll learn how to create great fills, improvise and jam in a band setting so you feel totally comfortable at your next gig.
Technique, Speed, & Fluency
Learn to play your favorite songs at the tempo you want to play them. Learn songs faster, master harder music, and have your playing hold up under pressure.
What Happens When You Apply
A straightforward process designed to give you total clarity.
Apply
You'll answer a few short questions about how bass fits into your life, your current goals, and musically where you're at.

You'll leave knowing why things haven't clicked for you, and what needs to change so you can become a reliable, gig-ready bass player - whether we work together, or not.
Who This Is For
(And Who It's Not For)
If you recognise yourself here then this program is for you. If not, then that's completely ok too.

Whether that's gigs, rehearsals, jam nights, or at home for friends & family.
You Want To Sound Musical, Not Mechanical

Your Progress Is Patchy
You don't know what to focus on or why problems keep coming back. You just want clarity on what to do next.

This call is about understanding what's holding you back. Not quick hacks.
You're Happy With YouTube
If you want free, general advice over personalised guidance and feedback, this isn'y for you.

Got Questions? Let's Clear Them Up
These are the same questions real bass players ask every day — so if you’re wondering too, you’re in good company.
Why Should I Apply & Get A Call?
The purpose of the call is to understand where you’re at with your playing, what’s been holding you back, and whether there’s a clear path forward.
I do have a coaching program that helps bassists become confident musical performers, and if it genuinely looks like a good fit for you, I’ll explain what that could look like for you.
But there’s no obligation to join anything, and the call is still valuable even if we don’t end up working together.
Whether you join the program or not, you'll leave with a clear path forward to achieving your goals as a bass player.
The call is free so there's nothing to lose.
Who Will I Be Speaking With?
You’ll be speaking directly with me, Hugh.
If one of my YouTube videos has sent you here then you're already familiar with me. But just in case you'd like more detail about who I am and my background...
I’m a London-based professional bassist and educator with nearly two decades of experience performing, touring, and teaching.
I’ve worked with Broadway and West End stars such as Rachel Zegler, Lea Salonga, Jeremy Jordan, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, and Titus Burgess, and toured internationally with Ramin Karimloo’s The Reunion.
I’ve also worked as bassist and musical director for UK recording artist Vince Freeman, supporting Van Morrison and Scouting for Girls, and for American artist Lara Johnston on her UK tour supporting The Doobie Brothers.
My musical theater credits include Bat Out of Hell The Musical, Rock Of Ages, Tarantino Live, Choir Of Man, Kinky Boots, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, An Officer & A Gentleman, I Should Be So Lucky and We Will Rock You.
I also teach bass at London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) and have lectured at University College Weston and Winchester University.
You can see what I’m up to on Instagram by following @hughrichardson — I regularly post clips from gigs, sessions, and tours.
If you have a call, it's me you'll be speaking with.
What Actually Happens On The Call?
The call lasts about an hour and follows a clear structure.
We’ll start by talking about your current playing, how bass fits into your life, and what you want to achieve as a bass player.
From there, we’ll look at what feels frustrating or difficult for you right now, and why those issues are showing up.
I’ll then walk you through what needs to change for for you to get on track with achieving your goals — so you leave with a clear direction, and a concrete set of next steps.
There’s no playing test, no judgement, and no “gotcha” moments. It’s a focused, practical conversation.
Is This Call Actually Free?
Yes.
There’s no charge for applying or for the diagnostic call itself. And there are no hidden costs once you have applied.
The call exists to determine whether it makes sense for us to work together inside my coaching program — and to give you clarity either way.
You won’t be asked for payment during the call unless you decide you’d like to explore that next step.
What Happens If We Don't Decide To Work Together?
Absolutely nothing.
No awkward moments, hard feelings, and nothing is lost.
If it’s clear that working together isn’t the right fit, you’ll still leave the call with a better understanding of what’s been holding your playing back and what to focus on next.
In some cases, I’ll also suggest alternative approaches or resources that make more sense for where you’re at.
There’s no downside to applying other than an honest conversation.
